Visibility leads to equality leads to justice. Launched on International Trans Day of Visibility 2021, Black AIDS Institute is proud to amplify a growing list of Black and trans-led organizations that are supporting the needs of the transgender and overall LGBTQ+ community. Black and Pink

Black + Pink Team

About Black & Pink National: A prison abolitionist organization dedicated to abolishing the criminal punishment system and liberating LGBTQIA2S+ people and people living with HIV/AIDS who are affected by that system through advocacy, support, and organizing. They are currently raising funds for a capital campaign for their LGBTQIA2S+ youth-serving initiative, the Opportunity Campus – a housing and community space in Omaha, NE for LGBTQIA2S+ youth and young adults who are impacted by such carceral systems as incarceration, foster care, and family surveillance. I Am Human

I Am Human Billboard

About I Am Human: Founded by a trans man of color, Alex Santiago, I Am Human was created to empower the lives of LGBTQ+ individuals. We recently launched a billboard campaign to raise the profile of Black Trans Lives. Our goal is to create a safe space for individuals who are homeless, living with HIV, and trans youth, with a focus on those who experience discrimination due to their lifestyle or gender identity. We aim to break the barriers with regard to the societal disparities in education, employment, healthcare, and housing. Our group is driven by a commitment to ensure all trans and gender non-conforming people are treated fairly and protected from violence.

NYTAG

Kiara St. James, Executive Director, NYTAG

About NYTAG (New York Transgender Advocacy Group): Led by Black trans activist and public speaker, Kiara St. James, we are a non-profit organization that aims to address social disparities that put the TGNC community, especially those who are BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and people of color), at higher risk of being vulnerable to homelessness, HIV, and violence – both physical and systemic. NYTAG’s holistic approach to advocacy empowers and gives a platform to TGNC community members by connecting them with local and state elected officials, mental health resources, and mentors, and by hosting community-led conversations. On Trans Day of Visibility, we send love to our community and recognize the severe impact COVID-19 has had on TGNC New Yorkers.

#brotherhood

Socorro Moreland

About #brotherhood: Was was created by Socorro Moreland to empower black trans-masculine individuals to live their best lives within their personal transition. Trans-masculine black people are disproportionately affected by abuse, violence, misogyny, poor health outcomes, and neglect when it comes to ACCESS.  Everyday life for those who aren’t transgender and Black is way different from those who can safely access resources. Trans-masculine black individuals navigate everyday life differently. Many within this specific community encounter different experiences and perspectives on what their transitions mean to them.  Many people have to navigate their lives perfecting who they appear to be in order to survive and maintain their safety within communities they’re from or where they travel to.
