The Normal Heart: Virtual Reading & Fundraiser

May 8, 2021 @ 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Virtual Reading: The Normal Heart

Dealing with the painful experiences of the early days of the AIDS crisis when everything was still mysterious, The Normal Heart dramatizes the struggle among gay men over which strategies would save their lives.

The Normal Heart launched originally as a play in 1985 and later as a movie, featured a white and gay male cast. For the first time, the May 8 virtual reading of this beautiful story will feature a predominantly Black and BIPOC cast.

Black Americans are worst impacted by HIV compared to Americans of all other races. It’s why Black AIDS Institute is proud to be a community partner and applauds The Normal Heart and the ONEArchives Foundation team for creating Black representation in storytelling about the HIV epidemic.

Cast:

The virtual reading features a predominately BIPOC and LGBTQ cast and will include a special introduction by Martin Sheen.

  • Sterling K. Brown (This Is Us, Black Panther)
  • Laverne Cox (Orange Is The New Black, Promising Young Woman)
  • Jeremy Pope (Hollywood, Choir Boy)

In 1982, he co-founded Gay Men’s Health Crisis, and then in 1987, he founded ACT UP. He died at the age of eighty-four in May 2020. He is survived by his husband, David Webster. The virtual reading on May 8 is directed by Emmy Award-winning director Paris Barclay, and this presentation is the first after Kramer’s death.
