Overview 

The Community Mobilization College (CMC) is an African American HIV University (AAHU) training and leadership development program that focuses on building grassroots skills to engage key stakeholders and communities in initiatives to combat HIV/AIDS.

Program modules are completed quarterly among one academic year (Sept-May) and culminate in graduation proceedings, including awarding an AAHU certification with a CMC concentration.

Following graduation, scholars are invited to join the AAHU Alumni Network for continued engagement with the University and other alumni.

Objectives 

By the end of this program, participants will be able to: 

  • Explain the history and importance of Black community mobilization in fighting the HIV/AIDS epidemic
  • Define key steps in building a community coalition 
  • Design and implement an effective community needs assessment 
  • Develop a logic model for community prevention and intervention initiatives

Program Details 

The Community Mobilization College consists of 8-week modules that span across 32 weeks, starting in September 2021 and ending in May 2022.

Module 1: HIV/AIDS in Black America 

Module 2: Community Mobilization 

Module 3: Needs Assessments 

Module 4: Logic Modeling 

Module Format 

  • Content is delivered in a hybrid (synchronous and asynchronous) manner 
  • CMC Scholars meet virtually twice per quarter, at the beginning and end of each module

Meeting 1: Orientation & initial coursework for the module, group discussion 

Meeting 2: Synthesizing module information, Q&A, discussion, mini learning checkpoint

  • Asynchronous material includes: 

a. Didactic sessions given by BAI staff and expert guests, as the academic schedule allows

b. Individual assignments for completion and submission by the end of the module term c. Biweekly discussion board prompts for group learning

Equipment/Materials 

  • Scholars must have desktops or laptops with webcams and access to high-speed internet.
  • A syllabus and curriculum guide is provided at the beginning of each program term.
  • All presentation slides are available in PDF format with each module. 

Scholar and Program Evaluations 

  • Scholars complete an ungraded knowledge assessment at the beginning of the program.
  • Scholars complete individual asynchronous work and discussion posts during each module.
  • Scholars complete a brief (3-5 question), mini checkpoint quiz at the end of each module.
  • Scholars complete a cumulative checkpoint examination at the end of Module 3.
  • Scholars design and present a brief needs assessment and detailed logic model for community mobilization around an HIV-related issue.
