Overview 

The Science and Treatment College (STC) is an African American HIV University (AAHU) training and leadership development program that focuses on HIV and its relationship to human biology, virology, and epidemiology.

Program modules are completed quarterly among one academic year from September 2021 to May 2022 and culminate in graduation proceedings, including awarding an AAHU certification with an STC concentration.

Following graduation, scholars are invited to join the AAHU Alumni Network for continued engagement with the University and other alumni.

Objectives 

By the end of this program, participants will be able to: 

  • Explain HIV’s history and impact on Black communities 
  • Analyze qualitative and quantitative HIV public health data 
  • Discuss the biomedical science behind prevention and treatment strategies 
  • Identify types and outcomes of structural/systemic racism 
  • Implement assessment and planning of effective community education initiatives 

Program Details 

The Science and Treatment College consists of for 8-week modules that span across 32 weeks that start in September 2021 and end in May 2022.

Module 1: Foundational Knowledge & Significance 

Module 2: HIV & Public Health 

Module 3: HIV Pathology, Prevention, and Treatment 

Module 4: Leadership Development & Capacity-Building 

Module Format 

  • Content is delivered in a hybrid (synchronous and asynchronous) manner 
  • STC Scholars meet virtually twice per quarter, at the beginning and end of each module

Meeting 1: Orientation & initial coursework for the module, group discussion 

Meeting 2: Synthesizing module information, Q&A, discussion, mini learning checkpoint

  • Asynchronous material includes: 

a. Didactic sessions given by BAI staff or Scientific Advisory Committee members 

b. Individual assignments for completion and submission by the end of the module term

c. Biweekly discussion board prompts for group learning 

Equipment/Materials 

  • Scholars must have desktops or laptops with webcams and access to high-speed internet.
  • A syllabus and curriculum guide is provided at the beginning of each program term.
  • All presentation slides are available in PDF format with each module. 

Scholar and Program Evaluations 

  • Scholars complete an ungraded knowledge assessment at the beginning of the program.
  • Scholars complete individual asynchronous work and discussion posts during each module.
  • Scholars complete a brief (3-5 question), mini checkpoint quiz at the end of each module.
  • Scholars complete a cumulative checkpoint examination at the end of Module 3.
  • Scholars design and present a brief program plan for a community HIV prevention initiative.
